Imagine you're back at work. You're two weeks into your return and you can't help smile because everything is just how you wanted it. What does that look like?

 

Did you know that just visualizing success not only increases your chances of achieving it but it can also reduce anxiety? So do yourself a favor, make a mental movie of that perfect end state and then begin to chart your path for getting there, both consciously 

and unconsciously.

Predict & Flex.

Still working on finding your groove? Consider ways to increase both the predictability and flexibility of your schedule. Taking care of yourself is critical and will allow you to be a better parent and teammate. Identify and communicate the times when you might be unavailable - be it for bedtime routines, daycare drop-off, a morning workout or lunch - so there is predictability for you and your colleagues. At the same time, build in some buffer so there’s flexibility should any changes need to occur; have a meeting buddy or a daycare backup for example. And when you’re sharing these with your teammates, ask them if they have any routines you should be aware of.

Establish Clear Goals.

Clear goals are essential for team effectiveness. Now that you have a plan of who will do what in your absence. Make sure the goals for that timeframe are clearly articulated and agreed upon by the individual owning the work, their manager (if different than yours), and your manager. Take the time to socialize these with your teammates so everyone has a shared understanding.

Build Your Community.

You’ve got a big change coming your way. It’s great. You’re gonna be awesome. But it’s important to remember, you don’t (and shouldn’t!) go it alone. Now is a great time to start building your community. If your organization has them, consider joining a parents alias, ERG (employee resource group), or buddy program. If not, link up with other new parents to start sharing your thoughts and building your network. Remember, it takes a village!
